This highly ornate, relief decorated container's purpose was to to hold sewing and dressing implements such as bodkins (large blunt needles used to draw cord or ribbon through narrow clothing trims). Bodkin cases were often made of luxury materials such as gold, silver, mother of pearl, gilt metal. They were favoured by wealthy owners often to be suspended from chatelaines/equipage along with other matching needlework tools such as a scissor case, thimble case and cased waxer. For a similar chatelaine holding a similar bodkin case please see the book 'Antique Needlework Tools' by Nerylla Taunton, pages 30 and 31. She also references a 1740 trade card that is advertising such a bodkin.

Our gilt metal bodkin features a high relief depiction of Britannia holding a staff and shield.
