This rare item would have been sooo useful back in the 1820 period. It was a travelling compendium to house all of your essential daily accessories. You can see that it has been well used up until 1859 (a pencil inscription on the notebook).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe green leather front has retained its original working silver and blue enamel lock. You just slide down the little silver button to release. You can then unfold to see the contents. On the drop down section are two pink silk pockets edged with their original silver bobbin silk braiding.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe next section stores a small, all original rectangular mirror (cracked) behind which we see the two original silver topped glass scent \u0026amp; smelling salt bottles within their integral rectangular compartments. Each silver lid unscrews to reveal the original, removable inner glass stopper. One bottle even has traces of its original contents - we prefer to leave it as is but of course you may wish to clean it. There are three small vacant compartments between the perfume bottles.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eBehind this section is another pink silk pocket (the concertina pink paper sides each separated but easily fixed). Behind this pocket is a section that contains the original silver propelling pencil - hallmarked rubbed but SP for Samuel Pemberton easily seen. Next to it a card notebook with thick glazed card outer with pencil inscription for 1859. The laid paper pages within have a watermark that depicts a Dutch Pro Patria watermark made up of the symbol of the Maid of Holland together with a lion within a palisade fence, and the words ‘Pro patria’ – For one’s country) Apparently this syymbol was created to commemorate the liberation of the Netherlands from Spanish control in 1851.PLease note that you could easily replace the inner paper pad once full by visiting your local stationer or fancy goods retailer.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe next section is another pocket, this time a double pink silk pocket with silver braid edging. The two pockets divided by a section for holding your sewing tools. Now empty, it would have once contained such items as bodkin, awl, scissors, stiletto.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe final section is found attached to the back. We see two leaves of wool with silver couched thread edging for storing your needles and pins - two needles remain. The leaves have become detached from the top and are now held in place by a needle. Behind this is the last pink silk single pocket (folded pink paper sides detached, an easy repair).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eSo there you have it, a Tardis of a Georgian travelling compendium that stores an awful lot.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eSize:4 3\/4 inch tall (12 cm) by 2 5\/8 inch (6.6 cm) by 1 1\/8 inch (3 cm)\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eCondition: This 200 plus year old case has been well used by subsequent owners, see above description for inner contents and inner condition issues. The outer case is good and strong with old staining to the green leather, and wear to the leather around the top silver catch area - all part of its history.
