The portrait is one of a pair, her husband/brother sold separately. Please note that one frame is slightly taller than the other.

This is a rare chance to own not only a beautiful painting from Regency period England but in its very, very rare original frame.

The watercolour painting is on paper and features a young blonde haired lady facing us. She can be seen wearing a blue dress with slightly puffed sleeve, she wears a fancy lace adorned white mob cap with a lace ruff around her neck and lace modesty panel to her chest. The lady has blonde curly hair poking out from her mob cap at the temples. She has beautiful blue eyes and has clearly been painted by a confident and experienced portrait painter. If you study the ladies face you will see the skin tones have been built up in tiny brush strokes, a technique that was favoured by miniature artists.

The painting is housed behind its original glass in its original rare and sought after papier mache frame with two impressed crown stamp for William Hill and Co, Birmingham verso. William Hill was one of the best makers of paper mache frames for miniatures and small pictures. The company flourished between 1812 to 1835. Hill made the papier mache frames used in the famous John Miers’ studio during the Regency era. In fact it was William Miers who likely made the fancy rectangular ormolu bezel for the frame. As Sue McKechnie mentions in her book on silhouettes, page 37 when mentioning William Hill's paper mache frame business in Birmingham. "William Miers, a specialist in Ormolu ware and a maker of ormolu frames for both silhouettes and for portrait miniatures, sometimes fitted rectangular ormolu surrounds into a large rectangular papier mache frame".
Ours is the one of the largest known examples of his frames! The frame and ormolu bezel are of the highest quality.

This is the perfect portrait for anyone who is looking for a fantastic portrait in an extremely rare style of frame. It is perfect for the Georgian/Regency era home or collection of art work.

Measuring: Frame width 10 ½ inch (26.5 cm) by height 11 3/8 inch (29 cm). Aperture width 3 ¾ inch (9.5 cm) by height 4 ¾ inch (12 cm).

Condition: Light surface wear commensurate with age. A few minor chips to the back of the frame. The original 'vine and leaf' top hanger is held in securely albeit the pin is a bit crude to look at, but works perfectly.

Item ID:16746

https://onebakerstreet.com/products/19th-century-large-watercolor-portrait-lady-william-hill-birmingham-large-papier-mache-frame-c-1830
