Park, 47 Leonard Street London.’\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe engraving depicts Thomas Potter Cooke as Captain Aubry de Montdidier in ‘The Dog of Montargis’, or ‘Murder in the Wood’ which was a 19th-century melodrama based on the tale of Robert Macaire and his trial-by-combat.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThomas Potter Cooke (b 1786 – d 1864) was an English actor. Thomas’s father was a surgeon, who died when he was six years old. Thomas sailed, under age, on board the ship HMS Raven to Toulon, and was present at the Battle of Cape St. Vincent in 1797. Thomas nearly drowned at Cuxhaven, where HMS Raven was lost. Thomas sailed again on board HMS Prince of Wales, carrying Rear-Admiral Sir Robert Calder, to the blockade of Brest. In 1804, Cooke made his stage début at the Royalty Theatre in Wellclose Square. T P Cooke was a highly successful actor with his career taking off in 1820.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eA.
