Dating from the Napoleon III period, circa 1850, it reflects the neo-classical taste for figures from antiquity that was so popular in French decorative arts during the 18th and 19th centuries. We see a tiny classical figure with helmet, sword and shield sat on top of a most decorative twin handled lidded cassolette, or incense\/potpourri holder (the lid does not open and never has). The cassolette sits upon its original green marble\/serpentine base.
