The lovely portrait is of Mrs Pennell, she can be seen holding a letter in one hand. Very often the portrait artists of the day would have a studio with a set and props for the sitter to hold or sit in when they were having their portrait taken. We love the way in which the artist has painted the curls in her hair, can you see her Mantilla tortoiseshell comb at the back of her hair behind her Apollo Knot bun. The creases of fabric in her giant typical 1830s Gigot or 'leg of mutton' sleeves are highlighted with Gum Arabic. She wears jet black dangle earrings, and a black lace fichu.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe portrait is a wonderful example of 19th century folk art. The painting is on paper\/card and is housed behind old glass in its original bird’s eye maple veneer frame. The frame is also complete with its original backing board with inscription reading ‘Mrs Pennell, cousin to mothers’ grandfather on the Howard’s side. He worked as an auctioneer and was the son of Walter George Ryley and Mary Howard Ryley, née Ormiston (b 1864 – d 1931).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eMary Howard Ryley, née Ormiston (b 1864 – d 1931) was born in Alloa, Clackmannan, Scotland and was the daughter of Robert Ormiston and Mary Ormiston, née Howard (b 1835 – d 1923).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eMary Ormiston, née Howard (b 1835 – d 1923) was baptised in Loppington, Shropshire and was the daughter of Thomas Howard (b 1802 – d 1882) and Mary Howard, née Humpheries (b abt. 1806). Thomas Howard was a farm owner in Wem, Shropshire. Mrs Pennell would have been born some time around 1800 so the relation was on this line of the family.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe three generations mentioned above all lived together at 36 High Street, Wem, Shropshire during the 19th century.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThis is a fantastic example of early English folk art.
