This wonderful portrait was produced in England during the early 19th century, circa 1810. Hollow cut silhouettes are produced in the opposite way to traditional cut paper silhouette. They are highly sought after by collectors.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eIn a traditional cut paper silhouettes the artist cuts the paper around the sitter’s profile leaving a silhouette of the figure in the artist’s hand which he then colours black then applies to white paper. For the hollow cut technique, the artist cuts the sitter’s profile out of a sheet of white paper, he then discards the inner cut out and retains the paper surround to which he would then apply a black painted backing paper. Remember black paper was not invented until 1826 and so paper had to be colored black by any means, usually lamp black, soot mixed with bear!.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThis Regency era hollow cut silhouette features a young man in profile view placed upon a black painted laid paper background. The silhouette is very neatly cut, without any indication of where his\/her scissors inserted. The quality is so good we would of thought possibly by Mrs Sarah Harrington's hand, but the 1810 date is too late for her production. The silhouette is housed behind old rippled glass set within in its original pressed brass frame.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThis is a fascinating item, hollow cut silhouettes are extremely hard to find. Aperture width 2 ¾ inch (6.5 cm) by height 3 ½ inch (8.5 cm).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eCondition: The silhouette is in good condition with the usual age darkening to the white paper. The frame looks great on display but the back wooden support has two old repairs at 11 and 12 o'clock. Missing its original top hanger as this was positioned in the repaired section.
