This box is a rare and sought after example of early Tunbridge ware. The box features a transfer printed design to the lid with the scene titled ‘Bank of England From St. Bartholomew Lane’ after a drawing by Thomas Hosmer Shepherd (b 1793– d 1864) who was a British topographical watercolour artist well known for his architectural paintings.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe scene depicts The Bank of England as viewed from St. Bartholomew Lane, London with the tower of the Royal Exchange in the background.\u003cbr\u003e\nThe Bank of England is the central bank of the United Kingdom and the model on which most modern central banks have been based. It was established in 1694, nationalised in 1946 and gained independence in 1998. The Bank of England moved to its current location in Threadneedle Street in 1734. It was expanded throughout the 18th and early 19th century.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe box opens to reveal the inner storage compartment complete with its original Georgian pink paper lining, though missing its dividers.
