the-other-embroidery
18th Century Canvas Work Needlework Peahen Bird English C 1740

We were instantly smitten by the exceptionally beautiful English canvaswork picture that was made here in England during the 1720-1760 period. The nearly three centuries old muted colours combined with the period gilt rope twist frame make this a stunning combination.

The worsted wool stitching in both gros and petit point was wrought upon a canvas ground. This type of needlework was very much in vogue during the first half of the 18th century, when designs were transitioning from the naturalistic wool crewelwork's of the previous century. We wonder if this and its male Peacock partner (sold individually) were once part of the same firescreen/pole screen - see similar examples at The Met Museum Object Number: 64.101.1153 and Winterthur Museum 1957.0747.001 A, B.

We see a large female peacock bird, called a peahen. She is facing left and can be seen stood upon a cornucopia (horn of plenty) nestled among large, stylized leaves and fruits. From her beak she holds a bunch of grapes. Around the edge of the needlework is an original, of the period, very decorative woven braiding. This gorgeous and ancient needlework is housed behind glass in a decorative very early 19th century gilt frame with rope work style banding. The embroidery is one of a pair, each sold separately (the frame on this example is marginally less wide than the other). To the reverse the back panel is covered in 18th century crimson velvet.

This is the perfect framed textile piece for anyone who love the English country house look for their home.
