She has very neatly sewn an 1835 poem called The Sabbath into her plain woven linen sampler. She has used two colors of thread, red and blue. Her border of eyelet stitch is very accomplished. The rarity is the numbers. You see she has included number 1 to 37 under the top alphabet. She has also then included numbers 1 to 30 running vertically down the right side of the verse. Then she has also included numbers 1 to 31 along the bottom of her sampler!! This girl loved her numbers.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe Sabbath was originally a poem for two children to read, each child reading a separate line. It was called The Sabbath (A dialogue for two children). The poem was published in 1835 in the book called 'The Infant Teacher's Assistant, for the use of schools, and private families; or, Scriptural and moral lessons for infants; with observations on the manner of using them' by Thomas Bilby, R. B. Ridgway.\u003cbr\u003e\nJane Strange's version reads ( we have added punctuation to make it read better). It also make more sense if you imagine child 1 reading the first line, child 2 reading the second line, then back to child 1 reading the third line etc\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe Sabbath Day.\u003cbr\u003e\nRemember the Sabbath day to keep it holy, though the Sabbath bells are ringing, let us wander wild and free; While the flowers around are springing, Come and play along with me.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eWhat! and mock the God who made us?
