1790 Antique Scherenschnitte Paper Cut Sacrifice of Isaac Scene

A rare little cut paper picture from the end of the 18th century. This circa 1790 picture was cut with a knife or sharp scissors from laid paper. Later in the 1920s placed in the current frame.

The small and highly detailed scene depicts the well documented Old Testament story of Abraham sacrificing his son Isaac. This scene has always created much debate in many religions. It has been a favorite study for many paintings and needleworks throughout the centuries.

The scene is titled in cut paper in Dutch 'Abran Sofferande'. The scene come from Genesis 22 when God asks Abraham to sacrifice his own son Isaac. Abraham was fully intending to complete the act when as seen in the scene, a messenger from god interrupts and the Ram seen to the right of the picture is sacrificed instead.

Size: The actual cut paper picture is a mere 3 3/4 inch high by 2 3/4 inch wide ( 9.5 cm by 7 cm). It is housed under glass, inside a card mount within a 1920s wooden frame. Framed size is 6 3/4 inch tall by 8 1/2 inch wide (17 cm by 21 cm).

Condition: This paper cut is ancient, after 200 plus years it is showing its age a little. The old laid paper has a few gentle creases, has darkened with age, age foxing to the paper, some leaves are bent back. We have not opened the frame. As you can see the cut paper is applied to a dark backing paper. The glass does have a little movement.
