Item Description

A wonderful and original 1780 to 1800 period reverse painting on glass (NOT a reverse print) depicting the Virgin nursing the Christ child with the infant Saint John the Baptist in Adoration. We see St John wearing camel hair, with a staff and scroll. See similar works by Raphael. Also see similar 18th century reverse paintings in The Ryser Collection at the Corning Museum of Glass in New York. This reverse painting on glass is later housed in a modern gilt frame.

Size: Frame 8 5/8" by 10", Actual painting 6.75" by 5"

Condition: Not pristine as one would expect after 200 plus years. There is some flaking to the unopened reverse glass painted image which reveals the backing. Some old restorations to the dark background seen top left and top right corner.
