Item Description

We are delighted to offer this stunning, nearly 300-year-old embroidery that belonged to an English manor House collection. One of a matching pair, each retailed individually.

This small  English silk needlework was wrought in the finest chain stitch upon the finest linen in the early 1700s period circa 1740. The scene depicts classic 1720 to 1760 period floral sprays and an exotic bird perched up on scrolling stems. This design was inspired by the block printed Indienne Chintz and Palampores that were soo very popular at this period in England, Europe and North America with their meandering Tree of Life designs.. The word chintz derives from Western India and was first used to describe painted and printed cotton used for clothing. In fact we do wonder if our bird embroideries on linen started life as part of an 1720-40s apron?

The embroidery is housed behind glass in a vintage circa 1980s faux Georgian reeded frame with corner spandrels. The frame is of fine quality; the type made in London by top bespoke frame makers during the 1980s.

Size: Frame 9 inch by 6 ¾ inch (23 cm by 17 cm)

Condition: Very good to excellent considering its vast age. Minor fading to the bottom flowers. Minor age foxing to the very fine linen.
