18th Century Staffordshire Pottery Figure Winter Allegory English Antique 1790s
Item Description
This charming English pottery figure was produced in Staffordshire, England during the late 18th century, circa 1790 to 1800. This is an absolutely gorgeous example that is becoming very rare to find. The subject matter, size, and charming naivety all make for a very appealing addition to your early pottery or toy pottery collection.
This small pottery figure was likely used as a candle snuffer as her hollow base would easily allow for this. The allegorical figure is a depiction of winter, the lady is resting against a style wearing a warm head covering. The figure features hand painted under glaze detailing, we adore the polychrome purple/puce circles and her green cap/head scarf. This is a rare survivor from 18th century England. This delightful figure will display excellently in any setting, a true George III era antique.
Please see our collection of 18th and 19th century art and antiques listed separately in our store.
Measuring: Height 3.5 inch (9 cm) by width 2.25 inch (5.5 cm).
Condition: A very old chip to the base rim, a further manufacturing chip to base rim that is under the glaze from the manufacturing process. Minor grazes to back of base section. Possible over glaze restoration to her green hat, consistent with snuffing candles - her head would get hot which in time would create flaked outer glaze and she would be held by her head in one's palm, her head taking much wear.
