18th Century Staffordshire Salt Glaze Teapot Blue C 1760 AF
Item Description
We are thrilled to offer our early pottery collectors this finely potted stoneware saltglaze teapot. This ancient teapot dates to the 1760-1765 period and originated from the Staffordshire region of England. Its small dimensions make it a delightful addition to your early English pottery collection. Just look at that gorgeous cornflower blue ground (not cobalt enough for a Littler's blue). This piece surely would have brightened any interior back in the 1760s when the only means of illumination was candlelight.
This small salt-glaze teapot is of globular shape with typical crabstock handle. Both the handle and spout have an impressed naturalistic bark/leaf design. The central cartouche to each side features beautiful hand enamelled polychrome flowers, each side is almost identical. We love the splashes of yellow which really pops against the blue.
Size: 4 1/2 inch tall (11.5 cm)
Condition: This finely potted teapot is 266 years of age, you would not expect it to be in pristine condition. The lid is a good, professionally made replacement. There is a restored chip to the underside of the spout. An old drying crack to the interior, part of the manufacturing (not damage). There is a very, very faint 1 cm hairline that is seen to the interior base. If you look at that same area to the exterior you will see a small flea bite to the foot rim, the cause of the hairline. All minimal but mentioned for accuracy.
A rare piece, in a rare colourway.
