19th Century Cottage Print The Lover Engraving by J Fairburn C 1835

We do love Georgian Cottage prints and Tinsel prints, there is something about their naivety that is altogether very charming. These little hand coloured prints clothed the walls of houses and cottages during the early 19th century.

This delightful hand colored nursery print dates to the 1835 period. The print is titled ‘The Lover’ and features a couple navigating a style in the countryside, notice how the gentleman is extending his arm to help the young lady. The engraving is one of a pair with the corresponding print titled ‘The Husband.’ In ‘The Husband’ we see a husband being not so attentive, looking away as his wife climbs over the style. A tongue in cheek scene!

The engraving is housed behind original glass in its original stained soft wood frame. This is the perfect item for anyone who loves folk art.

The print was published by John Fairburn (fl. 1789-1840) who was a Regency era printer and publisher of popular prints. He also retailed and printed maps, charts and books for the general public. We find his address listed bottom right as 110 Minories.

Measuring: Frame width 4 7/8 inch (12.5 cm) by height 7 inch (18 cm). Aperture width 3 3/8 inch (8.5 cm) by height 5 3/8 inch (13.5 cm).

Condition: Minor tear to paper near gentleman’s shoulder. Light surface wear to frame commensurate with age.
