Item Description

Oh la, la - we were instantly attracted to this rare French 1820s era engraving because of its visual appeal, with those gorgeously fresh and vibrant hand coloured costumes and the delicious old bubbled glass. We adore the fashion details: his skin tight breeches, his gold fob, her cuff bracelets, earrings, scarf, red slippers and her maids sewing basket, scissors and balls of thread!!!What's not to love......

This charming hand coloured theatrical engraving was printed in France during the 19th century, circa 1826. The engraving is titled ‘La Fille A La Maison’ which translates to ‘The Girl At Home.’ The engraving was printed/published by Lordereau at No.17. St. Jacques, Paris, France.

The engraving depicts a scene from the 'The Mother at the Ball and the Daughter at Home' which was a play that was performed for the first time in Paris, at the Théâtre National du Vaudeville, on November 30, 1826. We see pretty young lady dancing in front of a mirror, while her maid has fallen asleep in the chair. At that moment a handsome young man appears to her. The script roughly translates as:

'The Girl at Home - Ernestine, daughter of Madame de Mirval, was preparing to accompany him to the ball given by Princess Owinska. When, out of submission, she resigns herself to staying at home, entrusted to the care of Juliette, her maid. To dispel her boredom, she imagines dressing up as if she were actually going to the dance. And begins to dance, admiring her elegant costume, while Juliette, her maid, falls asleep next to her. Alfred de Soligny, who has long yearned for Ernestine's hand, slips into her apartment unnoticed, to wait for a favorable moment to declare his love for her'

The engraving is housed behind old bubbled glass in its original frame. This is the perfect item for anyone who loves all things French, particularly French interiors. This is the only example we can find!

Measuring: Frame width 13 ¾ inch (35 cm) by height 10 1/8 inch (26 cm). Aperture width 12 ½ inch (31.5 cm) by height 8 ¾ inch (22.5 cm).

Condition: Paper is a little rippled in sections, minor age related toning to paper, minor staining to bottom right corner of paper. Light surface wear to frame.
