19th Century Portrait Miniature Young Man C 1820
Item Description
This wonderful little portrait miniature was painted in England during the 19th century, circa 1820. The watercolour painting is on paper and features a blonde haired young man in profile view. The painting has been produced to a high standard; we love how the artist has painted his eyes and the curls in his hair. This is a fantastic example!
The sitter would have likely been a middle, upper middle-class gentleman as this is a quality piece. Portrait miniatures were the go-to method for capturing likenesses pre photography. Many artists worked in the trade; many were itinerant artists travelling the length and breadth of the UK. The artists often stopped in major cities and tourist towns to paint sitter's portraits.
The painting is housed behind its original convex glass in its original papier mache frame. The portrait is ready for display. We can only imagine who this young man was and what a life he lead.
Measuring: Frame width 4 3/8 inch (11.5 cm) by height 5 1/8 inch (13.5 cm). Aperture width 2 ¼ inch (6 cm) by height 2 ¾ inch (7.5 cm).
Condition: Light surface wear, minor area of discoloration to edges of paper from sunlight light over its vast lifetime.
