Item Description

This charming little silhouette of a young infant boy was produced in England during the early 19th century, circa 1828. The very young sitter is a two or three year old fellow called Anthony Orr. Of course, the custom of dressing young boys and girls both in frocks continued during the first half of the 19th century.

Anthony Orr was a farmer who was born in Cartmel, Lancashire, England on the 2nd of December 1826 and died in December 1907. He was the son of Thomas and Deborah Orr. Anthony first married Jane Backhouse in 1853, Jane died in 1859. Anthony then married Mary Bibby in 1860, sadly Marry died in 1862. In 1864 Anthony married for a third time a Miss Elizabeth Whineray.

The silhouette is painted on card and is housed behind its original convex glass in its original papier mache frame. The reverse of the silhouette features the artist inscription reading ‘Anthony Orr, born at Cartmel, December 2 1826. Son of Thomas and Deborah Orr.’

This is a wonderful item with a named sitter, the perfect item for anyone who collects Georgian era portrait miniatures or silhouettes.

Measuring: Frame width 4 1/8 inch (10.5 cm) by height 5 inch (13 cm). Aperture width 2.25 inch (6 cm) by height 2.75 inch (7 cm).

Condition: Very good, three very minor surface grazes to frame and a minor water stain just below the bezel.
