Georgian Portrait Silhouette of a Young Gentleman Reverend Joseph Atherton Wanton Christ's College Cambridge C 1830
Item Description
This wonderful portrait silhouette was produced in England during the 19th century, circa 1825 to 1830. The late Georgian silhouette is painted on paper and features a young gentleman sitter in his 20s shown in profile view. This young chap wears a frock coat with the tall collar of the 1830 period, with V notch to the coat lapel. His hair is cut short and is swept forward in waves from the crown to the face, again the fashion during the 1820 to 1830 period. We love how the artist has highlighted the curls in his hair in a technique known as ‘bronzing.’ The silhouette is housed behinds its original convex glass in its original papier mache frame. The back of the frame features a previous owner’s inscription in ink naming the sitter.
THE SITTER
The sitter is The Reverend Joseph Atherton Wanton. Joseph was born in 1804 in Meriden, Warwickshire, England. He was the son of Joseph Brenton Wanton (Rev) MA (b abt. 1777 – d 1853) and Mary Wanton, née Weston (b abt. 1773 – d 1831).
Joseph Atherton Wanton was educated at Christ's College, Cambridge, England. During the 1850s Joseph was living with his wife Mary Ann Wanton and children at the rectory in Teddington. Joseph was the curate of Teddington. Joseph died in 1859 at Tunbridge Wells, Kent, England.
