Item Description

This fascinating cut paper portrait silhouette was produced in England during the 19th century, circa 1840. The silhouette features a gentleman sitter in profile view. The silhouette is complete with its original stained wood frame with decorative roundels, old striated glass and ancient backing paper which lists the history of the sitter.

'Uncle, Henry John Davis. Born May 11th 1804 (in Liverpool). Died April 16th 1867 (in France)'

Henry John Davis Born, Esq was indeed born May 11th 1804 in Liverpool and died April 16th 1867 in Boulogne-sur-Mer, France. Henry John Davis was formerly a member of the Middle Temple. The Middle Temple is one of the four Inns of Court entitled to call their members to the English Bar as barristers, the others being the Inner Temple, Gray's Inn and Lincoln's Inn. Henry was a graduate of Edinburgh University, Barrister-at-Law. One of his sons was called Horace/Horatio Langton Davis, who was also a Barrister-at-Law.

The silhouette was purchased as one of three brothers, each brother sold individually.

This is a wonderful portrait silhouette, perfect for anyone who is looking for the perfect conversation piece, or the English country house look for their gallery wall.

Measuring: Frame width 3 5/8 inch (9.5 cm) by height 4 ¾ inch (12 cm). Aperture width 2 ½ inch (6.5 cm) by height 3 ½ inch (9 cm).

Condition: Minor age related toning to paper.
