Item Description

If you collect early antique sewing tools or sewing notions, or commemoratives...this precious little Georgian printed silk needlebook will make a fine addition to your sewing collectibles collection.

This extremely rare silk needle book was made in England in the year 1827. Rare because not many of these silk pincushions would have survived. This is a memorial pincushion commemorating the death of The Duke of York in 1827. The needle book features a monochrome steel engraved printed portrait of His Royal Highness The Duke of York. Below the portrait we find the printers details reading ‘Published by R. Millar, 14 Paternoster Row.’ With original interior pink paper linings and original 4 x wool leaves for holding your needles.

The pincushion was published by Robert Millar who was an engraver and publisher of children’s books who was active in London during the early 19th century.

Prince Frederick, Duke of York and Albany (b 1763 – d 1827) was the second son of George III, King of the United Kingdom and Hanover, and his consort Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. A soldier by profession, from 1764 to 1803 he was Prince-Bishop of Osnabrück in the Holy Roman Empire. From the death of his father in 1820 until his own death in 1827, he was the heir presumptive to his elder brother, George IV, in both the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland and the Kingdom of Hanover.

The opposite side of the needle book features the history of HRH The Duke of York. The final sentence reads ‘Soldiers Friend – His Royal Highness after great suffering died the 5th January 1827 in his 64th year.’

Needle books like this are rare and collectible. It is remarkable that it has survived all of these years. This is the perfect item for anyone who loves British history and all things sewing!

Measuring: Width 2 ¼ inch (5.5 cm) by height 3 inch (7.5 cm).

Condition: As you can imagine after approaching 200 years of age it is fragile. There are a few areas of fraying to silk edges throughout. A few areas of discolouration to the silk. The silk has perished over the spine now exposing the card. There is a hole to the card in the spine. Old moth holes to original wool leaves.

A super little historical sewing notion.
