Item Description

This stunning and unusual little alabaster sugar basket was produced in England during the 19th century, in the year 1805. The sugar basket is hand carved from the finest alabaster; the carving is so fine that the level of transparency is truly excellent....you will be AMAZED (nothing like later 19th century alabaster items). We particularly like the raised pineapple border which runs around the upper 3rd of the basket. It is fascinating to reflect that this stunning and high quality antique item was produced in 1805 - the year of Lord Nelson's famous naval engagement against The Napoleonic French and Spanish fleets at The Battle Trafalgar. Also the year in the US that Thomas Jefferson was sworn in for a second term as president. A year when the states of Michigan and Louisiana territory's were created but a year when Detroit city burnt to the ground. This wonderful antique basket is THE perfect conversation piece.

The rim and handle are constructed from sterling silver and feature the following marks, makers mark reading ‘T*R’ lion passant (.925 sterling), kings head profile (duty paid mark), ‘B’ date letter over crown mark for a Sheffield assay office produced in 1805. The makers mark ‘T*R’ is a recorded mark by an unknown maker.

As this is a unique item, we have not been able to find another example like it. This decorative item will display excellently in any setting. We can’t help imagine for whom it was made for, very likely a wealthy individual due to the material and workmanship and also the fact that sugar was extremely expensive during the early 19th century.

Please see our collection of 18th and 19th century art and antiques listed separately in our store.

Measuring: Diameter 2.5 inch (6.5 cm) by height 3 5/8 inch (9.5 cm).

Condition: Completely original, no damage or restoration. The silver has been gently cleaned but in hard to reach areas left blackened with age.
