Antique 1830s Childs Nursery Ware Plate Hey Diddle Diddle Cat & Fiddle
Item Description
If you are looking for a special antique cat themed plate for your shelf, or dresser, then you will love this plate. This charming child’s nursery ware plate was made in England during the 19th century, circa 1830. The plate features a puce monochrome transfer printed scene wth the associated rhyme titled ‘Hey Diddle Diddle.’
The rhyme dates to the 16th century, or even earlier, and reads:
‘Hey diddle diddle. The cat and the fiddle. The cow jump’d over the moon. The little dog laugh’d. To see which fine sport. And the dish ran away with the spoon.’
We see the cat playing the fiddle, the cow flying over the moon and the little dog laughing. What a fun plate this is. It is a wonderful example of early nursery ware. We love the raised floral detailing on this large plate, each daisy over decorated by hand in red, green and blue.
This is the perfect item for anyone who loves nursery ware and cats! Please see our collection of 19th century nursery ware antiques in store.
