Antique 1850s Folk Art Needlepoint Lamp Mat Woolwork Pot Holder
Item Description
A very charming little original lamp mat/ pot holder from the 1850s period. Possibly American in origin as such mats were not generally used here in England. Lamp mats were made to go under the oil lamps of the 19th century, the soft mat protecting the wooden surface of your table or dresser from scratches and drips from your oil lamp.
This would make a fine addition to your primitive/American inspired home as it works wonderfully well with samplers, tole and treen. It will look lovely hung from your fireplace wall.
This small, original example is one of two from the same previous owner, each sold individually, see last images. This mat was handmade by an early Victorian home maker. She chose her design and wools with great care and individuality. We see an small octagonal shape canvas ground worked entirely in worsted wools. The outer area in tent stitch needlepoint with little roundels or flowers. The centre worked in long stitches to imitate basket weave. The color palette is very appealing in subtle shades of beige, mauve, green and mustard. The reverse is lined with its original green worsted. Also complete with its original brown braid hanging loop.
Size: 7 1/4inch high by 5 1/2 wide, (19 cm by 14 cm)
Condition: A good genuine mid 19th century example offered in very good, clean condition. Very minor age fading to green worsted reverse.
