Antique 18th Century French Religious Painting Les Litanies C 1790
Item Description
This wonderful and very ancient watercolour painting on paper was painted in France during the late 18th century circa 1790. The painting features a religious scene of The Trinity. We see God the Father and Jesus Christ seated, each holding a blue orb, celestial sphere symbolizing sovereignty over the world. The Holy Spirit is depicted as a dove hovering between them. They are surrounded by various angels and seraphim in adoration with two large kneeling angels to the foreground representing the act of prayer and intercession. This work was inspired by Ventura di Archangelo Salimbeni (also later called Bevilacqua; b 1568 – d 1613) who was an Italian painter and printmaker. The painting is inspired by his painting titled ‘Disputa of the Eucharist’ that was painted in 1600. It is located at a church, San Lorenzo in San Pietro in Montalcino, Tuscany, Italy.
Our painting of religious figures also features religious text in Latin reading ‘Les Litanies’ (The Litanies):
“Kyrie eleison. Christe eleison. Kyrie eleison. Christe audi nos. Christe exaudi nos.
Pater de caelis Deus, miserere nobis. Fili redemptor mundi Deus, miserere nobis. Spiritus sancte Deus, miserere nobis. Sancta Trinitas unus Deus, miserere nobis.”
(Lord have mercy upon us. Christ have mercy upon us. Lord have mercy upon us. Christ hear us. Christ graciously hear us.
God the Father of heaven, have mercy upon us. God the Son redeemer of the world, have mercy upon us. God the Holy Ghost, have mercy upon us. Holy Trinity one God, have mercy upon us.)
A litany is a solemn, repetitive form of prayer used in religious services, consisting of a series of petitions or praises recited by a leader to which the congregation responds with a fixed, rhythmic refrain.
The painting is housed behind glass in a decorative 19th century frame featuring the corresponding framers label for L. P. Burke & Co, 2 Bloomsbury Street, New Oxford Street, London.’
The painting is one of a pair, each is a slightly different size as shown in final image, please not they are sold separately.
