Item Description
This wonderful Georgian silhouette portrait was produced in England circa 1835. The cut paper silhouette depicts a handsome male sitter in profile view. The artist has expertly captured the sitter’s profile in cut paper; the artist has then hand painted details in the sitter’s hair and clothes in fine gold strokes, a process known as ‘bronzing.’
The silhouette is signed verso by the artist/original owner reading ‘J. Astley, ???? Stalebridge.’ At some point in time someone has duplicated this information on a label attached to the backing paper.
The silhouette is housed behind glass in its original frame with a gilt slip. This is a fabulous, original portrait silhouette that is perfect for anyone who is looking for a unique artwork for their home.
Measuring: Frame width 5 5/8 inch (14.5 cm) by height 6 5/8 inch (16.5 cm). Aperture width 3 inch (7.5 cm) by height 4 inch (10 cm).
Condition: Light surface wear commensurate with age.
