Antique American Woven Patchwork Coverlet 1846 Henry Miller McCutchenville Seneca Ohio Corner Blocks AF
Item Description
We were excited to discover this genuine and rather rare early 1800s jacquard woven American coverlet. It is fully named and dated by its maker and offered in the most perfect colourway. Although in fair condition with some shortening in length and obvious signs of use, the pattern, colour and maker all make this a desirable coverlet full of American social history. It is still useable with care.

Clearly dated to the corner blocks Henry Miller. McCutchenville. Seneca. Ohio 1846. This attractive bedcover was jacquard woven in two panels and seamed at the centre. It was woven in the very attractive 'patchwork, stars and roses' pattern. It was woven on a box frame loom in the year 1846 by Henry Miller of Seneca Township, Ohio. His box loom had Jacquard attachments allowing the weaver to create more intricate patterns. Henry Miller was born in 1820, and created these woven coverlets between the years 1843-1851. These coverlets became especially invaluable during the Civil War years.
Our early example was woven in cotton/hemp and wool in a coral pink and navy blue thread. Seneca county had over 12 professional weavers in their district including Henry Miller. These weavers were using the skills and knowledge that were brought to their region by European migrants and family members who had settled in this area. These durable, richly coloured coverlets have been used and cherished down the centuries. They form an important link to Ohio's historical past. They really are now very sought after.
Size: Length: 78 inch (200 cm), Width:72 inch (182 cm)
Condition: Fair, which is reflected in its price. This 180 year old coverlet has been used regularly throughout its life. At some point in the past it has been reduced in length by two rows. There is some fraying to the side edges. The top edge by your pillow is very worn and thin. The reverse is showing the worst of the wear. A few loose threads and many areas of general thinning, seen when coverlet held to the light as in the last few images. A couple of small stains to the reverse. If you are looking for a good, unworn reversable example, respectfully this is not for you. That being said it still looks great on the bed, it can also be folded to sit pretty at the end of your bed.
We are hoping to return this beautiful antique textile to its home nation where with care it can be enjoyed for many more centuries. It would look stunning in your cabin, or prim home interior.
