Antique Berlin Woolwork Charts Hand Painted Embroidery Patterns Set of 4

Just perfect for the sampler maker, needlework collector are thee set of 4 original mid 19th century Berlin Woolwork embroidery charts. These little charts were made in Germany, hand painted at the factory with each tiny square representative of a single stitch. They were hand painted because this was before machine colored printing came in to existence.

Berlin wool work is embroidery with Berlin wools or any type of thread or beads on canvas by means of copying a coloured chart known as a Berlin pattern. Berlin wool derived its name from the wool that came from Merino sheep in Saxony. It was taken to Gotha to be spun and on to Berlin to be dyed. Before the invention of these patterns it was very rare to find any indication about the choice of colour or threads. Berlin patterns were always coloured by hand at first, until the emergence of industrial printing techniques. The names of a few Berlin pattern makers are often seen on examples such as here with A.Todt geometric pattern and part of Hertz and Wegener large floral spray.

Size: Floral Spray 5 1/2 inch by 5 3/4, trimmed and mounted on old card a long time ago. Hertz and WegenerBerlin partly trimmed away. Pattern 80 11423 visible.

Size: Trailing borders 7 1/2 inch by 4 3/4 inch, trimmed and mounted on card a long time ago. A.Todt in Berlin patter 1779 fully visible. 3 x Old vertical creases.

Size: 2 individual little floral sprays approx 2 3/4 inch square, trimmed of makers mark, blue violas have an old fox mark to edge.
