Antique Cream Papier Mache Pail Bucket Chinoiserie C 1830
Item Description
A very rare survivor from the late Georgian period. Dating to the 1830s this is a miniature pail/bucket made from the seldom found cream coloured papier mache. This is the perfect decorator, interior design accessory. We see a rich cream ground decorated with chinoiserie scenes in both silver and gold decoration. If we had to guess its original use, we would say a spill holder to be displayed on the fire range half filled with sand. You would dispense of your lit spills/tapers in the sand to quash the flame. A rare little survivor, the cream or white ground is very sought after in early papier mache. It has its original metal swing handle and old repairs, see images and condition report below.
Size: 4 inch tall by 4 inch at its widest point ( 10 cm by 10 cm), incl handle 5 inches tall (13 cm)
Condition: Showing its age and signs of usage. Both areas of exterior side handle attachment cracked but secure. Two old cracks to base edge. Minor age nibbles to top rim. Designs good and crisp.
A wonderful antique to now stand on your desk, or dresser filled with pens, brushes, feathers, dried flowers etc.....Find another???
