Antique English Pincushion Lutyens Style Arts And Crafts Country House C 1915

This unique embroidered pincushion was wrought in England in the 1915 period. The cushion body made from very, very fine cotton voile (double layered).The centre piece of this wonderful pincushion is the delightful silk embroidery of a large early 20th century country house in the arts and crafts style. We are reminded of the architecture of Sir Edwin Lutyens. The skill of the needleworker is amazing as the detail is phenomenal - almost like a needle painting. Around the edge is the original net lace frilled border and the cushion is filled with a very light weight sand.

The pin cushion has never been used and was likely created by one of the houses former owners. The house featured is very similar to Nuffield Place (formerly Merrow Mount), Oxfordshire, England. The house was built in 1914 and originally named ‘Merrow Mount.’ It was designed by Oswald Partridge Milne for the shipping tycoon, Sir John Bowring Wimble (b 1868 – d 1927). Oswald Partridge Milne previously worked for Sir Edwin Lutyens. When Sir John Wimble died, his widow sold the house to William Morris, 1st Viscount Nuffield (b 1877 – d 1963) of the Morris Motors Limited fame.

This is a fascinating and rather unique item that is perfect for anyone with a passion for textiles or architecture.

Measuring: Width 6 ¾ inch (17 cm) by height 4 ¼ inch (11 cm). Depth 2 ¼ inch (6 cm).

Condition: Very good and sound. Light foxing to background voile seen to the sky area. Old discolouring mark to rear of pincushion from an old label.

A very charming needlework pincushion produced just as World War 1 was beginning.
