Antique English Reticule Sampler Workbag Dated 1842
Item Description
A unique velvet drawstring reticule or workbag from Victorian England (we think it more likely to be a workbag for carrying your sewing materials and tools due to the size and cross stitch designs). This large black/brown velvet bag was lovingly cross stitched in 1842 for the owner with initials C.H.G as seen to the reverse. The front of the bag features a cleverly stitched vase of flowers. The reverse a pretty butterfly surrounded by floral garland, initials below. It has 8 x braid loops and original drawstring braid. Some of the original silk lining remains but it is much perished.
Size:10 1/2 inch (27 cm) tall by 8 inch (20 cm) wide.
Condition: Externally good, one old horizontal repair to front at 9 o'clock. The inside silk has mainly perished. The drawstring is fragile.
A one of a kind example to add to your collection.
