Item Description

A gorgeously executed painted silhouette of a dear little girl. This sweet child silhouette was painted circa1790 to 1810. Please study our many images to see the level of detailing to this little girl's hair, and dress. This silhouette was painted in soot black with some Gum arabic detailing around the hair for contrast in a certain light, then skilfully gilt bronzed in a fine gold with a teeny brush. We adore her temple curls, her empire waist dress with ribbon sash and centre buckle. The lace around her low chest (which denotes her as a girl rather than a boy who would wear a high neck line dress) has been painted with such delicacy and this tiny girl even wears a little choker necklace. When you consider the small scale of the portrait, which is the size of one's thumb...you really must marvel!!

This Georgian era silhouette was later cut down to fit this circa 1870's Victorian gilt easel frame. The frame has a twisted rope design metal border with inner black painted metal bezel, original curved glass and both original easel backing stand and top hanger.

To the reverse of the silhouette are the remains of a rare inscription telling us

"taken at mine mon??? ??ld with a machine J R Pickmere Jun???"

This would suggest that the silhouette was made using a mechanical device. This was perfectly common during the 18th and early 19th century. The most well known device was the physiognotrace invented by Giles Louis Chretien. Such devices helped the artist produce an accurate outline very quickly and be able to reduce the scale from life scale to miniature.

Size: Framed 4 inch (10 cm) tall by 2.75 ( 7 cm) inch wide

Condition. The silhouette is in good condition with minor crazing/ flaking to the soot black paint. Some age darkening to the paper/card ground. The frame has signs of wear, the inner bezelled frame can detach from the outer rope twist frame if pushed too hard. The old domed glass is wobbly with three old chips to the edge.
