Antique Georgian Folk Art Painting Portrait Boy Dog and Wheelbarrow Signed & Dated 1835 AF

This is a unique opportunity to own a wonderfully original antique naïve folk-art painting from the early 19th century. This incredible watercolour painting is on card/paper and was painted in 1835. The painting is housed behind its original glass in its original frame complete with its original backing board. The painting is one of a set of three from a private collection, each sold separately.

This is one of the most desirable types of 19th century folk art, naïve paintings featuring children with their pets! In this painting we see a little boy wearing a dress holding a white hat, he is seen with his pet black labrador type dog. From the mid-16th century until the late 19th or early 20th century, young boys in parts of the Western world were unbreeched and wore gowns or dresses until an age that varied between two and eight. Breeching was the occasion when a small boy was first dressed in breeches or trousers.

Notice also the wheelbarrow which features the artist naming the sitter, reading ‘J. T. Leonard?, aged 5 years, 1835.’ We also see a spade in the wheelbarrow and a riding crop resting on the grass. All toys for little boys.

These paintings are highly sought after by collectors, genuine examples rarely come to the market, so this is an amazing opportunity to own such a decorative painting.

Measuring: Frame width 16 ½ inch (42 cm) by height 13 1/8 inch (33 cm). Aperture width 12 ½ inch (32 cm) by height 9 ¼ inch (24 cm).

Condition: Not perfect, it is showing its nearly 200 years of age. As you can clearly see in our images, the card has some rippling, age-related staining and several holes and areas of disintegration to the card. Light surface wear to frame. A minor area of veneer loss to bottom left corner of frame.
