Antique Georgian Tole Snuff Box Duke of York & Mary Anne Clarke Circa 1810

Such examples are becoming difficult to discover! We are excited to offer this original example to the discerning snuff box collector, folk art collector.

This small toleware 3 hinged snuff tin with cushion top was made in the Bilston, or Wolverhampton area of England during the 1810 period. For ref see similar at on page 263 of the book Japanned Papier Mache and Tinware c.1740-1940 by Yvonne Jones.

This quirky little snuff is very charming indeed. We see a red japanned body with hand painted images of a man and woman. Viewed the one way you see the Naval gentleman, turn it around and you will see a lady. The transformation portraits depict the Duke of York and his mistress, Mary Anne Clarke. Mary Anne was mistress of Frederick, Duke of York and Albany from about 1803-06. In 1809 a scandal broke out over the fact that she had been paid by army officers and clerics to help them gain promotion through her influence over the Duke.

Size: 3 1/2 inch by 1 3/4 inch wide by 1 inch high (8 cm by 4.5 cm by 3 cm)

Condition: Showing its vast 200 years of age. The toleware surface is dry and stable but with signs of much old flaking. An old dent to the top of the lady's hat. Opens and closes well.
