Antique Irish Folk Art God In A Bottle Circa 1840

These fascinating folk art creations are based on the theme of a ship in a bottle. Instead of a ship inside, you most often see a crucified Christ and, or the symbols of The Passion: ladder, spear, hammer etc.

These fascinating folk art bottles were thought to have originated from Ireland and spread across the world by Irish workers taking a piece of home and their faith with them. But you can also discover similar bottles in France, and Australia. The Bottles can be found in a range of sizes and designs, see last images as we have a single owner collection of three of differing formats.

Our Victorian example is inside a gorgeous old free blown wine/ spirits bottle green tinge with no side moulded seems or makers text. It has lovely old air bubbles in the glass. Inside is a hand carved out of pine wood crucifixion cross with facetted brass beads held in by pins. Also gold metal thread decoration can be seen throughout. Surrounding the cross are hand carved wooden implements of The Passion.
