Antique Painting Portrait of Children Two Sisters Georgian Circa 1825

This is one of our favourite late Regency era artworks as the sitters are SOOOOO sweet! This stunning, delicately rendered watercolor and pencil painting was produced in England, circa 1825.

This all original painting features two little sisters holding hands. The painting has some wonderful little fashion details. The older of the two girls can be seen wearing a longer, natural waiste-line, calf length dress with black silk sash. Her short ruched sleeves adorned with an elaborate matching black silk 'shoulder-knot' in keeping with the adult ladies dresses of this period. Her hair is short with a center parting and she is holding a nosegay or posy of flowers in her hand. We love the way the artist has painted the reflection on her square toed shoes. This little girl would be approx aged 4 years. The younger of the two children, aged approx 1 years has the same center parting and the same smaller scale version dress as her sister. This young toddler holds her silver and bone teething ring attached to her waist sash via a silk ribbon.

We cannot help but wonder who these children were, they were likely from a wealthy family as portraits such as this were reserved for middle and upper class families. The artist was clearly a talented and confident portraitist. This fine painting would have been displayed proudly in the family’s country house or large town house. Paintings such as these really transport you back in time.

The painting is on paper and is housed behind glass with outer gilt slip. The original 19th century birds eye maple frame has a superb original warm coloring and its centuries old patina is a delight. This is a classical English country house artwork.

Measuring: Frame width 9.5 inch (24 cm) by height 12 inch (30.5 cm). Aperture width 6 5/8 inch (17 cm) by height 9.25 inch (23.5 cm).

Condition: Very good. Minor age toning to the paper. One spot of foxing just to the left of the toddler on the sofa. One small surface scratch to the paper by the sofa wooden foot. AS fashions changed, original two top hangers that would have sat at the top edge of the frame were reduced to one and moved to the reverse. Mentioned for accuracy.
