Antique Reform Jug British Political History Purple Transferware C 1832

This rare and decorative historical transferware printed jug was made in England in the 1830s. The commemorative jug celebrates the Royal Assent of the Reform Bill, 7th of June 1832.

The Reform Act of 1832, officially known as the Representation of the People Act, was a landmark piece of legislation in the United Kingdom that overhauled the electoral system, abolished ‘rotten boroughs’ and extended the franchise primarily to middle-class men.

The front of the jug features the crown above a lion with text surround reading ‘The Purity Of The Constitution Restored.’ The lion represents Britannia and is resting next to two pillars with an equal weights on a scale. One reads Commons, the other reads Lords refereeing to the House of Commons, and the House of Lords. These are the two chambers of the British parliament.

The remaining side features the key players in the Reform Act which the jug refers to as ‘The Zealous And Successful.’ We see portraits of Earl Grey, Lord Althorp, Lord John Russell and Lord Brougham.

Measuring: Width including handle 6 ½ inch (17 cm) by height 6 ½ inch (16.5 cm).

Condition: Natural crazing throughout, faint hairline below handle section, may have been professional restored as jug does not ring when tapped but if restored it is good, professional restoration as we cannot see where it was restored.
