Item Description

A lovely little treasure, a fabulous Victorian glass Potichomania or decalcomania rolling pin. Perfect for your folk art interior. It displays wonderfully on your door, wall or shelf filled with folk art or nautical treasures.

What on earth is Potichomania we hear you say? Well ladies and gents, Potichomania was a craze that was revived during the 1850s of converting a plain glass item in to more expensive looking an imitation porcelain item. The art form was very fashionable, it was advertised in the newspapers and magazines of the day. You would choose your vase, glass or rolling pin. Cut out your chosen prints (which could be bought in sheets at stationers and 'potichmanie warehouses'. You would paste your print to the inside of the vase, then apply several layers of size(gluey varnish). Then add the chosen ground color (usually white) which was either painted over the entire design or poured in and sloshed around and poured back out. Then 'voila' you have an item that mimics the more expensive porcelain!!

This fabulous glass rolling pin was made in England during the 19th century, circa 1850 to 1860. It started life as just a clear glass rolling pin. The method above was applied using several nursery print scenes to the interior including ‘Farmers Daughter x 2,’ ‘Highland Laddie’ and ‘Huntsman’.

This is the perfect item for anyone who loves 19th century crafts and creativity, nursery ware, or nursery prints.
