Item Description

This is a beautiful example of a Victorian steel bead encrusted purse that was a firm favorite of its original owner. This gorgeous example does show much wear to the reverse, but from the front it is offered in very good condition and will still delight and enthrall.

This original early Victorian example dates to the 1840 to 1860 period, see similar steel framed examples at MFA, Boston. Our example is very heavy and substantial, owed in part to the interlined (padded) wool paisley body. The swirling paisley design has been profusely embellished with stunning cut steel beadwork. This embellishment adds to the lovely weighted feel of this bag; no wonder it was loved, you will want to carry it. The frame is the original cut steel frame with push button opener that opens and closes perfectly with a good, satisfying snap. There are a row of individual faceted cut steel heads to the steel frame. These heads have also been used as decoration along the base of the body, this time painted black. A pretty triple swag cut steel fringe runs around the circumference of the purse body. This beauty has retained its original steel double chain handle AND its beautiful blue silk interior with THE prettiest ribboned flower border.

Size: Purse body 10" by 7.25" at its widest point. Combined with handle - total length 16.5"

Condition - From the front is very good and just perfect for display or if you were very careful, for re-inactment. The swag fringe has some rusting to the cut steel beads. The reverse is the worse for wear. Sadly where the fabric has rubbed against clothing, the woolen paisley fabric has worn back to the linen lining. AS is so common, there is some rusting/ corrosion to the steel frame. There is some minor rusting to the cut steel chain handle. Faults mentioned please be assured that this displays beautifully and you will enjoy handling this lovely example as it conjures images of Victorian full skirts over crinolines.

This is a wonderful example to add to your collection. P
