E is For Exhibition Plate, Noel Riley, Gifts For Good Children Invitation, 1991

This is an important plate for the nursery ware collector, or those of us who adore typography. Many of you will be familiar with the excellent reference book ‘Gifts For Good Children’ by Noel Riley. This wonderful little plate was the private invitation for the book’s premier in 1991; it certainly beats a letter! The transfer printed text verso reads:

‘Richard Dennis invites ---------- to an Exhibition, Gifts For Good Children, The History of Children’s China 1790 – 1990. Christies Education, South Kensington, Dec 9th 6 PM.’ The invitation was to Caroline and James, this section has been handwritten in gold writing. Richard Dennis is an antiques collector and publisher of books, predominantly about antiques...see last images. Many of the plates that were photographed and referenced in the book were indeed from Richard Dennis's own private collection. We have been very lucky to recently acquire several of those ACTUAL plates that were actually photographed in the book in 1991.

The book was published in 1991, and the exhibition was held at Christie's Education, Old Brompton Road, SW7. The exhibition was promoted in Country Life magazine.

This exhibition launch plate features a monochrome transfer printed design reading ‘E Is For Exhibition.’ The stylised ‘E’ features lots of scenes depicting children playing, we see children playing with their cats, dogs, rocking horse and dolls.

This is a unique opportunity to own such an interesting plate. We are massive fans of the book, this plate displays excellently alongside earlier nursery ware, or even a Ravilious or Bawden collection.

Measuring: Diameter 5 ¾ inch (14.5 cm).

Condition: Very good, a few natural crazing lines within the glaze.
