Georgian Portrait Miniature Monochrome Lady C 1790s
Item Description
This unusual portrait miniature was produced in England during the late 18th century circa 1790 to 1800. The watercolour painting is on paper and features a lady in profile view wearing a large mob cap with fancy frill, and matching chin stay. She wears a large handkerchief/shawl wrapped around and crossed over her dress. The shoulder and sleeves of her dress are narrow. She has the appearance of a country lady.
What makes this portrait so unusual is the style of painting, a monochrome portrait with a black background painted around the sitter. This is quite unusual yet repeated for the same sitter but in a larger scale, see last image of same portrait, retailed separately.
This example is also unusually small, even for a miniature painting. The painting is housed behind its original flat glass in its original papier mache frame. One of the smallest frames we have handled! This is the perfect little portrait for anyone who loves all things Georgian and Regency. Perfect for anyone who collects early portrait miniatures and silhouettes.
