Early 19th Century Portrait Miniature Gentleman By J. H. Gillespie C 1820

This delightful portrait miniature was produced in England during the early 19^th century, circa 1820. The painting features a handsome and distinguished looking young gentleman in profile view; we love how the artist has painted the swept forward curls in his hair. The painting also features a hatched background which enables us to identify the artist as it is in the hand of J. H. Gillespie. This hatched brown background being one of his favourite techniques!

The portrait miniature is by the sought-after artist J. H. Gillespie (fl. 1810 – 1830). Gillespie worked in London, Edinburgh and Liverpool, leaving in 1820 for Halifax, Nova Scotia. This type of portrait. The portrait painting is on paper/card and is housed behind its original convex glass in its original papier mache frame.
