Early 19th Century Portrait Miniature Lady Blue Dress By J. H. Gillespie C 1820s
Item Description
This delightful portrait miniature was painted in England during the early 19th century, circa late 1820s. The Georgian painting features a lady in profile view; we love how the artist has painted the front curls in her hair and the fancy ribbon to her diaphanous cap. The blue dress is so incredibly vibrant with its narrow sleeves and large fancy ruff! The painting also features a hatched background which enables us to identify the artist as J. H. Gillespie. This hatched brown background being one of his signature techniques!
The portrait miniature is by the sought-after artist J. H. Gillespie (fl. 1810 – 1830). Gillespie worked in London, Edinburgh and Liverpool, leaving in 1820 for Halifax, Nova Scotia. This type of portrait. The portrait painting is on paper/card and is housed behind its original glass in its original papier mache frame.
