Early Regency Tunbridge Ware Penner Painted Whitewood Souvenir Of Margate Gift C 1820

This rare Tunbridge Ware Whitewood penner was produced in Kent, England during the early 19th century, circa 1820. This item comes with excellent provenance. Name given upon purchase.

A penner is a portable container that was used for storing/transporting your writing materials, quills and ink bottle (now missing)

The cylindrical container is constructed from three sections via a screw top. The sides decorated with painted bands of red, yellow and black stringing. The container/box features its original green printed label reading ‘A Margate Gift’.

Margate is a seaside town on the north coast of Kent in south-east England. It became a popular place for tourism during the 18th century, owing to easy access via the Thames. Souvenir items such as this would have been manufactured in the environs of Tunbridge Wells, Kent and then retailed in the town listed on the label. We know that William George Bettison (b 1802 – d 1853) was selling such wares from his shop in the Marine Library, High Street, Margate.

This is a rare item; we have not found another identical example.

This is the perfect item for a collector of early treen, writing accessories or the Regency collector!

Measuring: Width 4 inch (10.5 cm). Diameter 1 1/8 inch (3 cm).

Condition: Light surface wear commensurate with age. Perfectly stable old, repaired, hairline to top section of lid.
