Item Description

From a single owner sewing tool collection comes this ancient and very fine George ii era black shagreen leather scissors’ case with quality early steel scissors inside. This gorgeous nearly 300 year old case dates from the 1730-1770 period and is likely French, or Flemish in origin. Scissor cases were prized personal possessions that would have been purchased at the toy-seller shops that were becoming popular in London during the early 1700s. At this time toy-shops were not the domain of children, instead they were set up purely for adults to purchase small, extravagant items usually of great expense. In fact from the 17th century such cases were often given as marriage gifts in France and the Low Countries.

Our scissor case could also be suspended from a chatelaine see the top suspension hook.

We just adore the simple, non fussy combination of black leather and rows of steel clouté studs. It has a Tudor look and feel to it, although not quite as early as the Tudor period of course. It is offered in good, original condition with lots of natural aged patina.

If you collect early sewing tools, this will make a fine addition to your collection. Please stop a while and browse other rare sewing tools from this collection, see last images, each for sale individually.

Size: A small 3 3/4 inch long (9.5 cm) by 1 3/4 inch at its widest point (4.2 cm).

Condition: Good for its vast age. The push button opener works well, so too the original hinges. Minor loss to the black leather near the pointed tip. As you would expect, some losses to the teeny silver studs near the front button and rear hinge. The early steel scissors work and are a tight fit wear the inner case is a little squished.

It is a delight to hold, you have to wonder who else has held and used this ancient scissor case down the centuries??
