Item Description

This wonderful portrait silhouette profile was taken in the year 1820. The silhouette features the male sitter in profile view and is painted on card. The silhouette is housed behind convex glass in its original frame complete with its original backing paper with the original owner’s ink inscription reading ‘T Erskine of Edinburgh August 18th 1820.’

THE SITTER
Thomas Erskine (b 1788 Edinburgh - d 1870) was a lawyer and lay theologian who came from Scottish landed gentry. Thomas spent much of his childhood with his maternal grandmother at Airth Castle, Stirlingshire, Scotland. Thomas succeeded his brother, James Erskine, in 1816 and inherited the impressive Linlathen Estate, Dundee, Scotland. Thomas spent much of his life surrounded by the influential figures of the day such as Thomas Caryle (b 1795 – d 1881).

This is the perfect item for anyone with a passion for early silhouettes, theology or a connection to Scotland!.

Measuring: Frame width 4 7/8 inch (12 cm) by height 5 ¾ inch (14.5 cm). Aperture width 2 ½ inch (6.5 cm) by height 3 1/8 inch (8 cm).

Condition: Light surface wear to frame. Old chip to top right corner of frame.
