Georgian Silkwork Embroidery Young Lady Farmer Small Size C 1800 English AF
Item Description
We have retailed lots of George III era silkwork embroideries over the past 30 years. It is always exciting to come across a subject that you have not seen before.
This smaller sized Georgian silkwork is a honey because the girl depicted is very human, very characterful, very spirited. She really could be any the teenage daughter of any of us. There is something about that sassy, slightly defiant look that we all recognise as once parents of teenagers! As well as looking straight at us the viewer with that 'what are you looking at' attitude, she also daringly displays her bright red shoes!! What a brazen little hussy considering ankles should definitely not be viewed at this 1800 period, let alone in full view of the church that you can see in the background!! She carries her small flagon of ale attached to her rake to quench her thirst when working in those fields full of corn and wheat. We have called her Sassy Sally:)
The silkwork is housed behind its original glass in its original wood frame with pressed brass detailing.
This is the perfect item for anyone who loves early textiles and anyone who loves the country house look.
Measuring: Frame width 8 ½ inch (21.5 cm) by height 9 ¾ inch (24.5 cm). Aperture width 6 ¼ inch (16 cm) by height 7 ½ inch (19 cm).
Condition: Minor fraying to silkwork, the occasional area of loss, staining and rippling to the silk (looks better in real life). Surface wear to the wooden reverse of the pressed brass frame with one area of loss, and evidence of old repairs through the centuries. Not detrimental to the structure in any way.
