Item Description

This wonderful hand blown opaline glass sugar box (sucrier) was produced circa 1782. This pretty sucrier is constructed from opaque white glass. This opaque white glass has a bluey/orange iridescence when held to the light. This white glass looked like porcelain from a distance but of course was skilfully blown from glass!! Small items of this type of glass were often given as wedding gifts at this time.

Each end of the sucrier is decorated with a charming hand enamelled floral spray; the central scene depicts a stone column with a house in the background. The sucrier is complete with a very old, replacement, make do metal lid with brass handle, the original lid would have been glass too. This is a decorative item that will display excellently in any setting.

Measuring: Width 5 inch (13 cm) by depth 3 7/8 inch (9.5 cm). Height 4.5 inch (11.5 cm).

Condition: Some very small fleabites to inner glass rim.

A very rare and remarkable survivor produced at a time when sugar was SOOOO fashionable and precious.
