Miniature Sanguine Stipple Engraving Cupid After Angelica Kauffman C 1770 RARE

We are really sad to be parting with this one!! Small 1700s all original little frames with their engravings are becoming almost impossible to find. This one is the perfect size, with the perfect romantic Cupid subject.

This wonderful miniature sanguine engraving was produced in England during the 18th century, circa 1770. The engraving is after a painting by the celebrated artist, Angelica Kauffman. Sanguine originates from the Latin word SANGUIS meaning blood, hence the red colored ink used in the printing method.

Angelika Kauffmann (b 1741 – d 1807) was a female Swiss painter who had a successful career in London and Rome. Remembered primarily as a history painter, Kauffman was a skilled portraitist, landscape and decoration painter. She was, along with Mary Moser, one of two female painters among the founding members of the Royal Academy of Art in London in 1768.

Cupid or Cupido, or Cupio was the ancient Roman god of love and desire, often depicted as a winged infant or toddler carrying a bow and arrows. In mythology, those struck by his arrows are overwhelmed with romantic passion. Today, the figure remains a symbol of affection, especially on Valentine's day.

Measuring: Frame width 3 1/8 inch (8 cm) by height 3 ½ inch (9 cm). Aperture width 1 5/8 inch (4 cm) by height 2 inch (5 cm).

Condition: Some minor age-related marks to frame, but no cracks/repairs which is so rare for an oval frame. This is an original and unrestored piece which is what we favour!
